To do lists

Today I'm:

1. Listening to the Flight of the Conchord's album & totally groovin to it.
2. Taking care of business.
3. Buying flowers at the market & making chicken tortilla soup for dinner.
4. Wearing Nars lipstick in Dolce Vita (great everyday color).
5. Drinking cinnamon apple green tea (MJ's inspired me to drink more tea).
6. Wishing Chris would propose a class for SCAD's Lacoste campus in France (sigh).
7. Looking for some car rental deals for my bro's wedding in March.
8. etc.

What are you doing?

Give Peace a Chance

I'm in love with this bag and 50% of the profits from sales of The Sak Peace Bag Collection goes to Seeds for Peace. Now here's a pricey purse I might be able to justify!

Learn to give

Don't be fooled. This isn't a website to free Condoleeza from Bush. Instead, test your vocabulary skills and for every word you get right, 20 grains of rice are donated through the UN to those in need. So far I'm up to 1,000 grains. Now if I could just decide what aphasia means...

It's Awesome Achiever Monday

"Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time — the need for mankind to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to violence and oppression." Martin Luther King, Jr (Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech, 1964, he was 35 years old)

Despite the unusually chilly weather today people made it out for the MLK Parade. The theme of the parade: "Dr. King: Great Leader. Big Dreamer. Faithful Believer. Awesome Achiever." Here's a photo from the parade:

On a totally different topic, here's a couple eco-links I'm enjoying today:

IdealBite.com - Get quick green tips daily by email - it's like a green DailyCandy. I signed up last week and so far I really like it. I just wish they'd incorporate more cute illustrations (a la dailycandy.com) like the ones on their website.

Native Energy - I read about this organization on the No Impact Man blog and finally checked it out. It's a great concept and certainly a successful one so far. It allows little folks like myself to offset my energy usage. So far I've signed up for $8 a month to offset 10,000 kWh per year, which is the average US household energy use. I figured, I spend that much eating out for lunch (if not more), so certainly I could eliminate one takeout meal a month to help offset my carbon footprint. That doesn't make me No Impact Girl, not at all, but every little bit counts right?

These are a few of my favorite things...

Being a lover of lists, here's a list of some of my favorite things as of late (not including friends, family and pets - those are a given):
  1. Aveda Smooth Infusion Line - Aveda is awesome and this line of products keeps my hair soft and shiny. Did you know that Aveda is the first beauty company to manufacture with 100% wind power?

  2. Atmospheres Salon - I found this small Aveda salon in Savannah and I just love my hairdresser Thomas - super nice and talented. I highly recommend him, tell him Jen sent you!

  3. Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals - I have the starter kit, but daily I use the foundation (in fairly light) and blush (glee). I received the kit as a present and now and I can't live without it. So quick, easy and natural looking!

  4. MOP (modern organic products) Lemongrass Lift - Been using this for three years now and I'm addicted. I think it's made with crack. Is crack organic?

  5. OPI nail polish - Besides awesome colors with creative names (like my favs Linoln Park after Dark and I'm Not Really a Waitress) these polishes don't contain bad for you stuff like DBP (dibutyl phtalate) and toluene. Another plus, they don't test on animals.

  6. Body Shop's Hemp Lip Protector - bought this at the airport on a whim and it's fantastic! Kinda herbal smelling (no it doesn't smell like pot and you can't smoke it, so please don't try). Hey! I just found out it's made with community trade beeswax from Zambia. This stuff gets an A+.

  7. New music - I'm loving the Juno soundtrack (still need to see the movie) and I'm also diggin Kate Nash - Made of Bricks. I'm also missing my muzak b**tch back in DC (you know who you are). I haven't received a good mp3 disk in ages - GRR!

  8. The Library - free books are always good. Even when they charge me late fees (I'm habitually late), it's cheaper than buying brand new paperbacks.

  9. Netflix Play Now movies online - if you get netflix you can watch tons of movies and (tv shows that are out on dvd) online for free. It's great for rainy days like today.

  10. Craigslist.com - Over the past six months we've used craigslist to find our rental house, chris' art studio, a washer and dryer and a canoe. Where would we be without craigslist??? Homeless, unhappy, dirty and on land...that's where.

  11. Real Estate Listings - I am obsessed. I don't think we're ready to buy just yet, but I can't stop window shopping for houses.

Nerds are for Birds

When the weather is nice, you'll often finding me working outdoors - laptop in tow. Today I'm on our back stoop being distracted by all the birds. First I saw a bright red cardinal, then a blue jay, then some gray and white bird and another I didn't recognize. I hate not being able to determine what type of bird I'm looking at - does that make me a bird nerd? This past weekend, Chris and I went canoeing (our maiden voyage with our new-to-us-but-totally-used Indian River 16-footer, which we christened "Chief") and saw TONS of birds. We realized that we really don't know our southeastern feathered friends. So today during a slow work moment, I decided to do some online research and found RightBird. So great. It's an online tool to help you identify birds. You select your region, the bird's shape, color, size, etc. and it narrows down the possibilities for you. You can even listen to the bird's call, if you're so curious. So the next time you have a Bird Nerd moment, grab your iPhone (if you're so privileged, I'm not) and find the RightBird. Now there's that cardinal again...if only I was Snow White, he'd totally land on my finger.

Fluke the Mutant Blue Cardinal (as pictured above) can be purchased through, get this, Bird Nerd on Etsy. I'm glad I'm not the only nerd.

The Old Orange Bag Scam

Quick observation from Bull Street - a guy in a big navy blue truck is using an official-looking orange Out of Order plastic bag to throw over parking meters when he doesn't want to pay to park. Good scam dude. I wonder if he stole that bag from a real out of order meter or if he got it on Ebay. photo borrowed from athensonline.com

I'll be there for you WGA

Sick of reruns and reality tv? Welcome to the club. We're into week 10 of the writer's strike and it might be time to turn off the tube and open up a (gasp) book. But before you do something wild and crazy like that, read this great article from the San Francisco Chronicle and learn a little bit about what's really going on. It's gonna be a fun run

So I think I jinxed it for Hillary. Just as I received my Hillary for Prez bumber sticker in the mail and affixed it onto my car, she lost in Iowa. I blame myself. But to be completely truthful, I like Obama, Hillary and Edwards. The democrats have a good group to choose from and I'm having a hard time deciding who I like best. At first I went for a more known factor, a comfortable Clinton. But by the time her sticker finally reached my house, I was having mixed feelings. Obama has such energy and he's got a way of moving people. Is he our Bobby Kennedy? Time will tell. I think the Republicans have a much worse decision on their hands. I mean really, Huckabee? Any time evangelist and politician are mentioned in the same sentence I get scared. But that's just me. He's had some great photo ops though. Not all candidates are backed by Walker, Texas Ranger. Maybe Oprah and Chuck Norris should duke it out? Now that would make fine television.

Cold Snap

So Happy New Years! I hope y'all had a safe and fun evening ringing in 2008. In order to protect the names and faces of the not so innocent (you know who you are), I've decided to refrain from posting photos of my evening.

So I ended 2007 being a very bad blogger. I went from an almost daily blogger to biweekly. I hope you'll forgive me. Chris and I were out of town for a week around xmas. Visited the in-laws in Cortland, NY (see "their house" above). We had a great visit, saw a lot of people and even had some snow. Snow is best when you can see it, play in it and leave town before you're forced to shovel it.

I was really hoping after getting back from NY that we'd have some warm weather, which we did for a couple of days. But it's a new year and a new weather pattern. Mother nature is giving us the cold snap. How rude! We might hit record temperature lows in the next couple days. And no, that doesn't mean 40 degrees, more like 20 degrees and brrrry. So what does our local news suggest we do? "Make sure you wear a hat if going outdoors." Wow. I never would have thought of that. So glad I watch the news or else I might have walked out in shorts.
Here's my short list of new years resolutions:
  • Take yoga classes
  • Blog more
  • Take more photos and put them in albums
  • Go dancing (maybe take a dance class?)
  • Check out the local (infamous) drag show
  • Try a new recipe at least once a week
  • Buy green products and support enviro-friendly companies
  • Bring and use cloth bags when shopping (say no to plastic bags in 2008)
  • Read more books!
  • Join a book group (or form a book group)
  • Explore Georgia outside of Savannah
  • Pay my folks a visit in California
  • Go to Art Basel in Miami (Chris will look for good art, I'll be pre-occupied with celeb spotting)
That's it for now. But I'm sure I'll come up with more. What's your NY's resolutions???
